For many of us, museums equal boredom. Even if the exhibition is to your liking and aligns with your passions, keeping focus and truly contemplating can be a great challenge.

Even more challenging: spending time in a museum you haven’t chosen yourself. Maybe you’re on vacation and a parent or partner convinces you to go see a local exhibition, that you initially really don’t find interesting, but you got to give it your best try! Here are our best tips for an enjoyable and eye-opening museum visit!

1. Unless forbidden, bring water and even a snack! When you enter a museum you are basically locked in that building until you leave again (unless you wanna pay multiple entrance fees). Avoiding thirst and hunger during your visit is rule number 1! It is going to make focusing absolutely impossible and most likely result in you annoying the hell out of your museum buddies.

2. Get the audio guide! Almost every single museum has one now: an audiobook guiding you through the museum providing all essential facts, making sure you don’t miss out on anything interesting about what you’re looking at! It also helps to block out noise and disturbances coming from other museum guests.

3. Put your phone on flight mode - let yourself disappear in the exhibition and take some much needed time off social media, plings and beeps.

4. When experiencing an art exhibition: pay attention to details! Example: find a painting with many small details and a complex motif and study the bottom left corner. Look at the colours, the pencil brush strokes, the shapes. Take a moment to consider and appreciate the process behind creating this particular piece.

5. Take some time afterwards to discuss what you just experienced. Maybe your museum buddy has some thoughts that didn’t cross your mind at all and will make you see the exhibition from a different perspective. If you went alone (which is an activity we definitely recommend) go online and explore further!
